The Experiment
That summer I was working at a lab running tests related to the telomere lengths of white mice. My experiments sought to prove you were the most beautiful person in the world. I would show the mice a statue of you I had made and then a statue of Mussolini and if the mice went to Mussolini I would administer a series of tiny but excruciating shocks. I wrote a poem about you with hard rhymes and Italian words in italics and read it to the mice and the mice voluntarily shocked themselves until they could no longer experience World. I did not permit the mice to die. I engineered the mice for what seemed to them like an infinite life and then fed them images of themselves from others’ perspectives and also images of you from my perspective only. I’m in a stolen swan pedalo with one
of the mice and he’s asking me what it’s like to write ‘A Complete History of Self-Pity’. Mice find the troubadour thing cringe/obsessive but it has become my personal brand, so: tutto deve avere una fine tranne il mio amore per te. I lean in to kiss the mouse and it kind of tilts its tiny head away and says oh and half-smiles and I say oh god oh my god I am so fucking sorry what am I doing and the mouse says it is honestly so fine, then I shock the mouse terminally and
push it into a nondescript column of the Thames. My handlers overlook these events, anxious, insisting on the sanctity of the facts: one’s eyes frantic for at least a believable thesis; another invested in coherent narrative as a conclusion in and of itself. And then there’s me in an oversized lab coat, face pressed to the window, insisting a cloud formation resembles you, your eyes closed, laughing as if embarrassed by your own happiness.
