   We Ran Away

with no possessions
except a tulle ballet pink dress
we were about to commit a crime
or had just committed one
we fled to a house
the owner of the house kept asking if we were okay, if we needed
       anything
at some point it became clear they were coming to get us
there wasn’t enough time
for anything but double suicide
Bonnie really didn’t want to do it
Clyde insisted
but our guns – studded black weapons – were not nearly
       powerful enough
Clyde had Bonnie shoot him in the ass
pretend I forced you into this, you shot me and made your escape
but it was too late:
my mother had already entered the house
we heard her filming a video downstairs
about all the ways the house was run down and dilapidated
how it could be renovated and spruced up
slowly she came up the stairs

Houses have creaked a long time
